Origin of Kuravilangad Church
The four Families Shankarapuri, Kali,
Kaliyankal, Pakalomattam were the one who was responsible for the building of
Kuravilangad Church. it was said that there was a ‘Kadipallikudam’ in place of the present Kuravilangad Church. There
used to be a master who used to teach Christian children. Once when he went for
lunch, the children were playing around the kalari, when an old beautiful woman
appeared to them. The children were tired and thirsty. The woman knowing their
situation showed them a spring from which water erupted. The miraculous spring
exists even today behind the Kuravilangad Church. According to the instructions
of the old woman, the elders of the place build the Kuravilangad Church. It is
believed that many received miraculous healing after drinking the water. The
church was reconstructed under the supervision of the Fr. Thomas Mannakattu.
The church was believed to be built in the 4th Century. The church
bells brought from Portugal is a wonder sight and regarded to be the largest
church bells in Asia.
